Chapter Eight

Jerry stood in the white tiled shower letting the water run over his torso. He tried to recall when he’d been in this much pain and decided the answer was never. Not physical pain anyhow.

There was a knock on the door. “Mr. McNeal? Are you okay in there?”

I’m not even close to being okay. Jerry turned the water off. “I’m good. I’ll be right out.”

The door opened slightly. A deep voice sounded through the crack. “There’s a gown on the bed. I’ll be back in a few moments to check on you.”

Jerry would have scolded the person for opening the door, except that the only thing he’d managed to find before stepping into the shower was a clean towel and a pair of cheap flip-flops that were little more than paper cutouts. Jerry dried off best he could, wrapped the towel around him, and pulled the door open the rest of the way. Gunter lay crouched in the corner, watching the comings and goings of the room. The moment Jerry made eye contact, Gunter wagged his tail but continued watching the main door to the room.

Gunter’s ears perked. A second later, there was a knock on the door. Before Jerry could respond, the door pushed open, and Fred stepped inside. That the man didn’t react to the deep purple bruise that covered most of his torso let Jerry know Fred had already laid eyes on his injuries.

Fred smiled. “You look slightly better than the last time I saw you.”

“When was that?”

“Yesterday.” The smile disappeared. “Don’t you remember?”

Jerry nodded as he pulled on the hospital gown. He recalled the ride down the mountain and lights flashing in his eyes and too many people poking and prodding. “I also remember saying no ambulance.”

Fred rocked back on his heels and laughed. “If I’d known how bad you were, I would have had them helicopter you out.”

“I’m pretty sure you are exaggerating.”

“Yes, well, our job does have its privileges. But I do recall the first word out of your mouth upon seeing me was morphine.”

“Yeah, that ride down was invigorating, to say the least.”

“You looked pretty green.”

Jerry doubted Doc had fared much better. “Where’s Doc?”

“He’s good. He got fluids and is now on the way to Arizona.”

That Fred got him into someplace so quickly was impressive. “The place is good?”

Fred nodded. “He’ll be well taken care of. Have you seen the doctor?”

“There were a lot of people in and out last night. I’m sure one of them was a doctor. I’m also sure I have enough radiation to glow in the dark for months to come. But if you’re asking if I know why I’m still here, then no.”

Fred looked at the recliner. “Anyone using this?”

“Gunter’s over there keeping an eye on the door.” Jerry motioned to where the dog lay and sat on the bed. He pulled his gown closed to cover the important parts. “Where is my Durango? I’m going to need a change of clothes.”

“It’s safe. So is your arsenal. We’ll get you some clothes when it's time to leave.
